They recommend a parity array is best spread over 8 spindles. At the moment I have an 4 port lsi card with 4x WD Red 3tb drives used as a redundant array and it does ebb and flow as it copies (as it fills and empties its cache) but I've been hitting over 100mbs - it seems best with smaller files rather than the large iso etc. I have had some decent speeds out of storage spaces. I suppose they want everybody to use powershell. simple things like searching for some control panel feature - say services or such like does a search but then categorises them and only shows you the first "app" category which of course has 0 searches and you have to expand the control panel section. Why would you want a touch interface on a server? finding stuff isnt fun. Early days yet so nothing to report apart from the horrible win8 gui. Effectively I am using the same hardware simultaneously thanks to the virtual nature. I'm using full blown Standard 2012 on a new server I've just built and then using Hyper-V virtual machines running whs2011 and essentials 2012 side by side to make sure I can do everything on 2012 I could with 2011. Has anyone moved from WHS 2011 to WS 2012 Foundation (upgrade isn't supported AFAIK) ? I'd like to know it can do everything my WHS 2011 can (specifically software RAID 5) with the addition of backing up Windows 8 (GPT) client PCs.

WHS 2011 costs around £35, the cheapest version of WS 2012 (Foundation, OEM only) is over £150!! WS 2012 Essentials is close to £300! The MS "solution" is to move to Windows Server 2012 - however, there's significant cost involved. I now have 2 Windows 8 PCs that I can't backup automatically onto my WHS 2011 system, and it seems that MS will NOT be fixing this in WHS 2011.

WHS 2011 will NOT backup a client PC with a GPT disk, only those with MBR style disk partitioning. However, there's one thing that's a problem, and that's backup of Windows 8 PCs.īy default, when Windows 8 installs it will convert the disk to a GPT disk. I'm currently using WHS 2011 on my home server/NAS and in general am very happy with it.
